One Store Opens, Another (Unexpectedly) Closes
Life lately? A mix of bubble wrap, borrowed trailers, and big feelings.
While we’ve been gearing up for the launch of Jonquies, riding high on fresh paint fumes and the thrill of new inventory, another chapter has quietly and suddenly come to a pause. My parents’ store, the one I begrudgingly grew up in, has closed unexpectedly due to a leasing issue.
They’re now in the in-between deciding whether to find a new space or call it a career. Honestly, they’ve earned a nap and a mimosa either way. But if you know anything about my family, you know we don’t exactly do stillness. So naturally, we borrowed a very large box trailer from my father-in-law, loaded it up with store fixtures and nostalgia, and have been spending most days back in my hometown playing the emotionally chaotic game of “Keep, Store, Sell, or Cry.”
Some of the pieces from their store will be finding a second life at Jonquies - fitting, since I basically learned everything I know about retail under that roof.
But if there’s one thing I know for sure - it’s that this odd little crossroads is temporary. Whether they reopen, reinvent, or (finally) rest, the legacy of their store lives on literally and figuratively inside mine. And if you see a particularly well-loved hutch in the corner at Jonquies… just know it’s carrying more than product. It’s carrying history. (And maybe a little sweat - that darn thing is heavy!)
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to go clean trailer dust off a display rack and remind my mom (again) that retirement is not the end - it's just more time for brunch.
With love mid-existential spiral at a storage unit,
The Jonquies Team
