Dare to Delegate

A few years ago I utilized Upwork.com for some graphic design needs while launching a new butcherblock brand for my “real” job. That first experience was satisfactory, so when I was faced with a desperate need for a quick turnaround, I found Noelia. My husband and I had already spent hours debating over a name and now we had to come up with something unique in a sea of online stores.

We gave her an inspiration image that we’d poured over, fallen in love with every time we looked at it, and now we were blind to all of its faults. 😂Admittedly, the concept was good but the execution was not. Where we went blatant 60s-70s, Noelia chose the subtle vintage charm of the smiling face. I was stubbornly convinced the face needed to go “the other way” when clearly, it didn’t. Without her, we’d be sitting here with safety cone orange, highlighter yellow, and grass green as my brand. Noelia very patiently guided me through necessary changes, offering suggestions on complementary colors and how to tie it all together. She was engaged in the process from start to finish, and I am so charmed by the character she created in the jonquie in a little more than a weekend.

In the types of businesses I frequented in my career - good but small, slightly behind the times, American manufacturing - a graphic designer was not in the budget. So we learned to do it ourselves, absorb the work as the staff numbers declined, and let the chips fall where they did. It never resulted in quality work because that was not my talent. Last week we thought we created a (nearly) satisfactory logo, but it was only when we asked for help that we found our perfect match. Delegation isn’t failure but instead recognition that a talent can be stronger in someone else. Let go to free yourself up for something that does need your specific talents and leave the rest to the professionals.

Dare to delegate often.
